Relocation Advice For Partners

Having to deal with the upheaval and personal change that relocation necessitates offers both a challenge and an opportunity. If you're employed too, and are following a relocating partner, you'll almost certainly be considering the future of your own career. We look at the options.

Though relocation is undeniably a time of stress, the good news is that, as far as working partners of relocating employees are concerned, it can offer you the ideal opportunity to review your current position, past achievements and learning points; reassess your next steps, short term goals and longer term direction and revitalise both your personal confidence and your career plans.

Relocation and the "Career Wheel"

If you're helping a relocating partner who's looking for work, the Career Wheel, developed to help people identify what they want in their career could prove invaluable. Sue Clarke explains how it works.

"The company wants me to move to Cambridge. It would be a great opportunity for me. What do you think?" As surveys consistently demonstrate, whether a partner's response is positive or negative increasingly depends on whether that partner believes they will find suitable work in the move.

Work may be necessary simply to earn a second income, or – as is more and more common – the partner has a thriving career and wants the move to promote their career prospects, too. In dual career couples, one partner's lack of career fulfilment may severely strain a relationship – and derail an otherwise successful relocation.

Career counselling for partners is an effective measure organisations can take to address the partner's concerns and needs, turning the relocation into a positive career experience for everyone. Working with a career counsellor, partners fully explore and clarify what they want from their career, and build a profile of their priorities for development and change. The Career Wheel, illustrated below, is a tool that a career counsellor may use to achieve this.

The Career Wheel is divided into eight spokes: Talents, Relationships, Control, Growth, Recognition, Fun, Balance, and Values.

The Essential Guide To Repatriation

When it comes to going home there are plenty of things to think about for the whole family. We have compiled a handy check list to ensure you cover all the bases.

Move Minus 12 Months

  • Check your passport is up to date for you and the whole family and organise any renewals
  • If you own a property in the UK and it is rented out, check when the lease expires and notify your managing agent/tenant that the tenant will not be able to renew at the end of the lease or give notice that you are exercising your break clause to terminate the lease
  • If you want to buy - arrange a mortgage, appoint a solicitor and start to research areas and properties on the internet or contact a relocation agent to help
  • Familiarise yourself with the current UK property market through property and financial websites, UK national and local papers and the Land Registry www.landreg.gov.uk
  • Apply for school places, check out websites, get prospectuses, check out league tables and Ofsted reports – For state schools you need an address in the area you're returning to and check out the application deadlines for new primary school intake and secondary school transfer. For independent schools check out application deadlines and entrance exam dates, pay any registration fees. Check the language teaching available.
  • Check out international and American schools if you think further international moves are on the cards
  • Consider taking advice from an Education Consultant especially if you might need to go 'to appeal' for your chosen state school place
  • Check out your tax situation and take into account any key dates and expenditure when planning the move back home
  • Check out finance and currency implications for the move – ie mortgage, rent, pension, savings, insurance etc
  • If you or your partner will be job hunting in the UK now is the time to review your career, start work on your cv and check out potential employers and the UK job market. If further education is an option check out places and application procedure.
  • Find out how to transfer/convert any professional or other qualifications obtained abroad
  • Familiarise yourself with websites and journals covering your industry sector/profession

Making Relocation Child Friendly

Relocatees often face life in a completely unfamiliar town, region or country, and those with children may find the lack of previous networks of friends and family a particularly daunting prospect. Offering practical ideas and systems of childcare to people with families could be of great comfort and value, and be the defining point of a successful relocation.

Almost 40% of the UK workforce are parents, and many struggle with juggling responsibilities to families with obligations at work. A flexible, family-friendly workplace, coupled with support for childcare costs, is a two-pronged solution to this problem.

MI6 is one high profile employer that now uses flexible working and childcare vouchers to attract a new generation of James (and Jane) Bonds.

'With extensive tax-breaks available from the government, you don't have to be in the intelligence service to realise that helping staff with childcare is a smart choice for today's employer,' said Emma Knights, Joint-Chief Executive of the Daycare Trust.

Getting up to speed with the range of incentives available from the government to encourage employers to offer help with childcare costs can help in the retention of relocatees. Costs incurred will usually be outweighed or balanced by reductions in National Insurance Contributions.
